Project Overview

The Construction of GLS Water Tanks project was undertaken by El-Masa El Zahabia Contracting Company to deliver to Saudi Aramco. GLS (Glass‑Lined Steel) water tanks are widely used in Saudi Aramco projects due to their durability, corrosion resistance, modular installation, and long service life. These tanks are typically deployed for potable water, firefighting systems, process water, and treated sewage effluent (TSE) storage. Their bolted, factory‑coated panels ensure high quality, rapid installation, and minimal site disruption.

Scope of Work

  • Engineering review and compliance with Saudi Aramco standards (SAES, SAMSS, SAEP, SATIP, SAIC).
  • Supply of GLS tank panels, roof structure, fasteners, sealants, and accessories.
  • Civil works: foundation design, excavation, backfilling, and reinforced concrete ring beam or slab.
  • Mechanical assembly of tank panels and roof.
  • Installation of internal/external ladders, manholes, nozzles, and appurtenances.
  • Hydrostatic testing, disinfection (for potable water), and commissioning.
  • Documentation: ITPs, QC records, as‑built drawings, and handover dossiers.

Compliance with Saudi Aramco Requirements

GLS tank construction must align with:

  • SAES-S-070 (Storage Tanks)
  • SAES-A-112 (Potable Water Systems)
  • SAES-A-104 (Fire Protection Water Systems)
  • SAEP-122 (Project Execution Requirements)
  • SATIP / SAIC for inspection and testing
  • Approved vendor lists (AVL) and material submittals

All materials must be sourced from Aramco-approved manufacturers and accompanied by mill certificates, coating reports, and factory QA/QC documentation.

Construction Methodology (High-Level)

  Pre‑Construction

  • Review IFC drawings, vendor data sheets, and Aramco comments.
  • Mobilize manpower, equipment, and certified rigging tools.
  • Prepare site, verify survey benchmarks, and secure work permits.

   Civil Works

  • Excavation and compaction per SAES-A-114.
  • Formwork, rebar, and concrete pouring for the ring beam/slab.
  • Anchor bolt installation and foundation curing.

   Tank Assembly

  • Unloading and inspection of GLS panels.
  • Installation of bottom plates, wall panels, and roof structure using torque‑controlled bolting.
  • Application of sealants and gaskets to ensure watertightness.
  • Installation of internal piping, manholes, and accessories.

   Testing & Commissioning

  • Hydrostatic test per SAES-S-070.
  • Leak inspection and corrective actions.
  • Disinfection (for potable water tanks).
  • Final inspection with Aramco PMT/Inspection.
  • Handover documentation.

Quality Assurance & Control

  • Implementation of an Aramco‑approved ITP covering civil, mechanical, and coating activities.
  • Material traceability and inspection records.
  • Torque verification for all bolted connections.
  • Dimensional checks and foundation level verification.
  • Final QA dossier submission.

  HSE Considerations

  • Compliance with Saudi Aramco Construction Safety Manual (CSM).
  • Job Safety Analysis (JSA) for lifting, working at height, and confined space entry.
  • Certified lifting plans for panel erection.
  • Proper PPE, barricading, and housekeeping.

Key Advantages of GLS Tanks for Aramco

  • Fast installation and minimal downtime.
  • High corrosion resistance due to glass‑fused coating.
  • Long service life with low maintenance.
  • Modular design suitable for remote or constrained sites.
  • Environmentally friendly and hygienic for potable water.
